John Stout spent his youth in upstate New York, Ohio, Belgium, Massachusetts, and south Florida. After running track and cross country and graduating from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Mr. Stout attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, earning a bachelor’s degree in Biology / Pre-Medicine. Having matriculated for a short time at each of the Harvard School of Public Health, and then the University of South Florida Medical School, Mr. Stout decided to pursue a career outside of the medical field. Mr. Stout worked days at Fidelity Investments and took evening accounting classes at Bentley University for three years, passing all four parts of the CPA exam in 1989. During this process, Mr. Stout realized that he enjoyed tax and business law. He applied to Boston University School of Law, and graduated with a J.D. cum laude in 1992. In law school Mr. Stout served as an Editor for the Boston University Law Review.
Following law school, Mr. Stout worked in the tax department at the accounting firm of Ernst & Young LLP in Boston, and then at a Boston-based venture capital law firm. Having endured 10 feet of snow in Boston during the winter of 1995-1996, Mr. Stout and his family took up a law firm offer to relocate to Charlotte – it did not hurt that their first trip to Charlotte was on the first weekend of March. Mr. Stout and family moved from Boston to Charlotte in 1996 to join a law firm to engage in the practice of tax law, estate planning, and business transactions. Between Boston and Charlotte, with a wife and two young sons, and just before studying for and passing the North Carolina Bar Exam, in 1997 Mr. Stout finished taking evening classes and received his LL.M. in Taxation from Boston University School of Law. During 2014-18, while working full time, Mr. Stout took 12 remote and in‑person courses at Harvard University Extension to earn a Master’s degree in Finance in 2018, enabling Mr. Stout to provide more sophisticated advice to business clients.
Since 1996, while in Charlotte, Mr. Stout has practiced law at various law firms, and worked in the private bank / wealth management divisions of three banks advising wealthy individuals and families. Most recently, in March 2021, Mr. Stout was fortunate and proud for the opportunity to join Arnold & Smith, PLLC as a Partner to assist in the development of a tax, estate planning & administration, and business law practice.
Throughout his entire career, Mr. Stout has consistently focused on working with entrepreneurs, business owners, individuals, wealthy families, and corporate executives in the interrelated areas of tax efficiency and strategy; trusts; estates; business formations; business growth; business purchases, sales, and transactions; charitable giving; and asset protection.
Mr. Stout is primarily motivated by his passion to educate his clients about, and most importantly to take advantage of (not lose), opportunities to take advantage of strategies to achieve better outcomes, and to avoid negative results.
In his free time Mr. Stout enjoys running, bicycling, hiking, triathlons, traveling with his fiancée and his sons, rescuing dogs, and summiting the highest point of every state (26 of 50 so far (might get only to 49 . . . Alaska’s Denali is quite tall)). Mr. Stout is also passionate about science and math, and has built up a substantial library for reading and eventually for creating presentations and possibly writing a book to inspire young people to remain curious and continue to learn about the wonder and elegance of math, physics, and biology.
